Why is an "u" sometimes added to words with an "or" together?
I was just wondering why sometimes, words that have the letters "o" and "r" together sometimes have the letter "u" added in.
For example:
Color spelled colour
favorite spelled favourite
favor spelled favour
honor spelled honour
The first few times I saw these words spelled like this, I thought it was just a misspelling, then I saw it in published book/articles.
The UK, Canada and many other Commonwealth countries use the traditional 'our' spelling, while America uses the 'or' spelling. Color etc. without the 'u' would be considered incorrect in the UK.
