Australian Culinary Field Molded By Western Cooking

When people hear Western food, they immediately think of Texas and cowboys. Not always so. Western food is a word mostly referred to the cuisines of Europe and Western countries, including Australia, which has one of the most diverse customs in the world. When it comes to the culinary scene, Australia is very multicultural, bearing Western cooking and other influences.

Because most of Australia's history is founded on the traditional British food brought to the country by the first British settlers, Western food in the nation is very prevalent. One can find hams and steaks very common in the culinary scene.

Breakfast in Australia is similar to breakfast in many Western countries. A light meal generally consists of toast, fruits, and cereals, while a heavier breakfast is similar to a complete English breakfast of sausage, hash browns, eggs, and bacon. For the beverages, it may include milk, juice, coffee, or tea.

Although lunch and dinner dishes in the country differ according to the taste and background of each family, they are mostly very Western-like. Common dishes include pasta, pizza, roast meat, vegetables, barbecue, and casseroles among many others. For outback food dishes, there are lamb chops, grilled rib-eye, and steaks.

Just like other Western countries, Australia also has a wide assortment of take-away snacks. Fish and chips, which is also associated with other countries, such as U.S. and England, is a favorite takeout food. Burgers, sausage rolls and meat pies are also common take-away food options.

Also common in Australia are American fast food chains, such as Pizza Hut, KFC, McDonald's, and Subway.

There are also lots of foods that while considered Western, are still very much an Australian icon. These include the favorite breakfast product Vegemite, a salty spread applied to toast; ANZAC biscuits and pavlova cake, although New Zealand also lay claims to these ones; meat pies; and kangaroo meat.

As Australia, a former British colony, is greatly molded by its first British settlers back in the days, Western food in the country is pretty predominant. It is able to continue its native taste and iconic foods even though its culinary scene is shaped by its settlers of various ancestries.
